Netflix is a customer of ours, but that doesn’t mean we get the inside scoop on the Internet giant’s content strategy. So count us as surprised and interested as anyone to hear that Netflix has reportedly outbid several cable networks for the rights to a new television series starring Kevin Spacey. Netflix wasn’t supposed to get in to original content, right? Well, if the rumors are true, then it shows the company believes it can be most competitive by adding some exclusive content to its subscription package.
A revolution is underway in the TV industry, with over-the-top video services upping the ante on traditional pay-TV providers. It doesn’t mean the death of cable, but it does mean more IP-based content delivery, and new expectations for subscription TV services.
