A Spectrum of Streaming Protocols
People often ask us about codec support and what format they should use for encoding videos. It’s a good question, but not a complete one. Just knowing what codec to use doesn’t solve the problem of how to stream your video to different types of devices. You need Apple HTTP Live for newer iOS devices, Silverlight Adaptive Streaming for anything using the Silverlight plug-in, H.264 over HTTP for many Android devices, and the list goes on. Above is a slide that our CTO for mobility solutions Jonathan Cobb presented this afternoon in a webinar with Streaming Media. It’s a nice overview, and a good indication of just how complex video streaming has become.
