Widgets and TAMI
VideoNuze reports today that EgoTV is distributing its "Malibu U" broadband TV show through widgets. This is yet another example of the innovation occurring in the IP video delivery marketplace. Since the content of a widget is continuously updated, a video widget could almost be viewed as a virtual set-top that can be embedded into a web page. Widgets add a social aspect to online video viewing; instead of clicking to a destination site, the widget brings the desired video to the web page of my choosing. As VideoNuze points out, this is yet another way to reach and engage fragmented online audiences on their terms .
Separately, The New York Times had a must-read article about NBC’s efforts to track the Olympic Games like never before. They’ll be introducing a"total audience measurement index," or TAMI. TAMI will provide data about viewers, unique online users and time spent on sections of NBCOlympics.com. It will provide a daily glimpse of Internet demographics, consumer preferences for video on computers and mobile devices, and how the Internet complements TV viewing. The results may help advertising efforts for the 2010 and 2012 Olympics.
This is a big step forward for the online video industry, as NBC is moving the conversation from technology to monetization. We look forward to providing services to NBC this August, as we are delivering all of the video you’ll see on NBCOlympics.com.
